My experience of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshop was amazing. It was a Sunday well spent! It was hosted by WiDS Pune Team in association with “PlayThinkTransform” certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® trainers in India and Thoughtworks.

It was amazing to see what effect LEGO® has on our thinking, it connects our conscious and subconscious mind. It helps bring out our ideas very well. Often it happens that when we are asked to build a model to show our ideas, we are clueless about what we are going to build, but when we start building with LEGO®, the ideas keep coming in on their own. It is surprising how you start with a very simple and small concept, and this process builds it into a very deep concept. During the building time there is also a music played in the background. The music also plays a huge role in calming our mind and getting us in the deep-thinking mode. LEGO® experts always tell us to build first and talk later. During the whole workshop, we were first told to build to display our ideas and then share the story behind the idea.

The models that we build are metaphors of ideologies. The same model can mean different things to different people. Everyone can have their own perspective.


First we started with some warm-up activities. We were told to build a tower using only 6 bricks. It was interesting to see how different people had different definitions of towers.


Then we were told to modify the tower and use as many bricks as we want in order to portray a quality that describes us. Everyone had some unique towers and stories about themselves.

After the warm-up, we were given a problem statement : ” Build a data science project for an NGO WBW(Women Back to work)”.

This problem statement seemed very vague at first. It was not clear what aspect do we need to work on, what are the problems and what should be the solution. Here comes LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® for our rescue !

First we had to determine what sector of women do we need to work with, we decided that by building models of the sectors that we think is important and then voting on the model all the team members liked.


In the workshop, we build a series of models asking ourselves different questions about the problem statement.

After building the models, we analyzed and grouped these models and this grouping gave us the following areas that we need to work on.

After that we classified the problems into the 4 main Data Science problems:

  1. Hypothesis Testing – Validating your belief with data points and techniques. This model helps us analyze whether our belief is true or false.
  2. Prediction Model – Building predictive model to either regress or classify. This model helps us predict the future based on the given past data.
  3. Cause and effect model – A model to identify or confirm cause from given data points.
  4. Pattern Analysis – Exploratory analysis to identify hidden patterns /trends /untold stories from given data.

It was astonishing to see how we got such a refined solution to such a vague problem statement which is given to us in the beginning. This is how LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® helps us find a well-defined solution to even a vague problem statement. We were smoothly flowing through the process and methodology and just did not realize, how time passed by. One has to really experience it to see the power of kinesthetics based learning, an unforgettable experience.
